Testimonial

Testimonial written by a past Grief & Loss Support Group participant

“My mother passed away in April 2017. Her health declined rapidly over three weeks. I was shocked by the suddenness of her passing. After the funeral, I returned to work. Work seemed busier than usual. I became short tempered, quick to get teary and a blubbering mess at night when I had time to think. My experience became worse as the months went on. I went to see a psychologist but I did not connect well.

My doctor put me in touch with the New Mornings group. The facilitators were fantastic, they were not just facilitators but people just like me who had experienced grief and loss and were willing to talk about it. These facilitators had a lot of emotions in one room to deal with and they handled it beautifully.

I learned a lot about grief and loss, but so much more about myself in nine weeks with the New Mornings group. I learned to listen, really listen to others without interrupting or asking questions. I learned that feelings of grief and loss can be caused by a wide range of events and appear in many forms such as anger or guilt. I shared my coping strategies, some good, some not so good.

An eye opener for me was the week that control was discussed. The topic of that week included being in control and being under control. I learned to identify and let go of things not under my control taking a lot of self-imposed stress out of my life. I wrote an action plan to learn to communicate my feelings with confidence. I visit this action plan every day and it works.

I learned that forgiveness wasn’t condoning something but letting go of the anger I felt, and that honouring memories wasn’t dwelling in the past but remembering the good things. I learned so much in nine weeks. By being able to discuss my feelings in a safe environment I learned to deal with my grief and loss.

The main things I took away from the New Mornings group were:

  • I was normal – grief and loss is a part of human life and is different for everyone
  • The tissue box in the centre was very busy for the first couple of weeks, but the tissues were being used less and less as the weeks went on
  • A bond formed within the group and the group guidelines were respected
  • The professionalism of the facilitators was far above my expectations
  • I learned to accept my grief "
